French promise world-class facilities in fight to win the $50 billion Future Submarines project contract
French government and business representatives on Thursday promised world-leading submarine facilities for Adelaide.
In Adelaide, French submarine bidder DCNS said it would partner with ASC to double the infrastructure at Techport, building a new facility on-site “larger than the size of the Adelaide Oval” if it wins the $50 billion Future Submarines project contract.
Sean Costello, former chief of staff to former defence minister David Johnston and now chief executive of DCNS, said the company had big development plans for Techport involving hundreds of millions of dollars.
“I would describe it as a megafactory. If the government goes for an all-Australia build, we won’t be doing parts in Melbourne or Perth or Queensland, we’ll do it here in Adelaide, but we may get parts from elsewhere.
“We will effectively replicate and mirror what we do in France, so we can guarantee to bring all the technology, production processes and designs, so we know we can get it right the first time.
